Satellite data can play a key role in providing the necessary insights into the atmospheric composition of Natura 2000 areas

Satellite data: for insight into Natura 2000 sites

For years, agriculture and urbanisation have caused a loss of biodiversity in the Netherlands and Europe. This has major consequences for nature and human welfare. In order to protect our flora and fauna, an area-specific approach is used. There are more than 160 Natura 2000 areas in the Netherlands in which certain animals and plants, but also their natural habitat, are protected.

However, too much nitrogen (nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3)) has been in the Natura 2000 areas for years. As too much nitrogen is harmful to nature, it does not help preserve biodiversity. Satellite data can be the key to obtaining the necessary insights into the air composition in Natura 2000 areas. Important policy decisions can be taken on the basis of this knowledge, for example the effect of NOx on Natura 2000 areas.

Caeli provides accurate satellite data that allows you to see the average values of gas in a Natura 2000 area. This data is obtained through a combination of measurement techniques using satellite data, the Caeli algorithm®, and resolution to 100x100 metres. For ammonia mapping (NH3), Caeli works with data from NASA satellites, for NOx mapping with data from the satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA). The data is easy to read on the map supplied by Caeli.

Because Caeli uses satellite data, expensive investments in hardware are not necessary. In addition, Caeli works with a subscription model in which the values of nitrogen dioxide emissions are delivered on a daily basis. It is also possible to monitor nitrogen. This provides insight into how mobility flows can change, which can substantially reduce nitrogen emissions in a Natura 2000 area.

Caeli's insights are the result of our super-resolution algorithm. With this algorithm, offered products can be delivered 'near real time' via an automated process. In very high resolution. In addition, Caeli is able to 'look through clouds' via imputation techniques. Missing data thus becomes visible.
