Using satellites, insight is gained into oil and gas emissions and leaky gas taps can be identified.

Satellite data as oil and gas emission monitor

Methane (CH4) has a negative impact on air quality and therefore contributes to climate change. It is the most important component of natural gas, and the extraction and transport of oil and gas therefore emits methane. This puts pressure on our environment. Blowing off gas is the largest source of methane emissions within the oil and gas sector. Methane can also be released in other ways, such as when a gas tap leaks.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. That is why it is important to keep methane emissions from the extraction and production of oil and gas as low as possible. Satellite data makes it possible to monitor this. Using satellites, it is possible to gain insight into oil and gas emissions and to identify leaking gas taps.

Caeli offers accurate satellite data with which you can see the average values of (methane) gas around, for example, oil refineries. This data is obtained through a combination of measurement techniques using satellite data, the Caeli algorithm®, and resolution to 100x100 metres. For the mapping of methane (CH4) Caeli works with data from satellites of the Sentinel 5p satellite with the instrument Tropomi. The data is easy to read on the map provided by Caeli.

Because Caeli uses satellite data, expensive investments in hardware are not necessary. In addition, Caeli works with a subscription model in which methane emission values are delivered on a daily basis. It is also possible to monitor methane emissions. Based on this information, important policy decisions can be made, for example when a decommissioned natural gas well is leaking methane.

Caeli's insights are the result of our super-resolution algorithm. With this algorithm, offered products can be delivered 'near real time' via an automated process. In very high resolution. In addition, Caeli is able to 'look through clouds' via imputation techniques. Missing data thus becomes visible.
